SOMETIMES bad news turns up even in Government statistics - usually because they have not seen it coming and so have had no time to massage the figures. The appalling increase in violence among young women, recorded by the Youth Justice Board, is certainly highly inconvenient for New Labour. For at first sight it seems to coincide fairly closely with the growth of uncontrolled public drinking, triggered by the repeated weakening of licensing laws. Tough Action On Ppi...But Much Too Late
AT LONG last, the ineffectual Financial Services Authority has taken some tough, pro-consumer action. It has written to all providers of single-premium payment protection insurance, which is taken out with loans, asking them to withdraw it from sale no later than May 29, 2009. For years, Financial Mail has highlighted the robbery that is single-premium PPI. It is outrageously expensive, it is often sold to borrowers without them even knowing that they have bought it and it is lumped on to the...

ONLY the most dedicated fans would remember Sunfighter, the six- piece Seventies pop band which had precisely four minutes and 14 seconds of TV fame. In cream-coloured flared trousers and blow- dried hair, they made it on to Top Of The Pops with their single Drag Race Queen which was judged by presenter Noel Edmonds to be 'quite nice'. It was Sunfighter's only hit and shortly afterwards, the band split up. More than 30 years on, most of the band members are presumably quietly living out their...
