CHRISTMAS is coming, but no one is getting fat. Everybody knows this is the toughest economic climate since the Second World War, a time of unparalleled awfulness.
Actually, Government figures this week suggest reasons to be, if not cheerful, then at least a little less glum. Yes, 2009 will be grim, as to a lesser extent will be the next ten years. But how bad is bad? There is one immediate bright spot.
