G.H. writes: I am a pensioner, retired and living in Cyprus. My wife and I have been members of Nationwide Building Society for about 40 years, but its new charges are affecting all its customers, especially those who live abroad. The Government gave us a two per cent rise in our pension, but Nationwide is going to take two per cent in charges, plus Pounds 1 per withdrawal. Over a year, this means we shall have to pay at least an extra Pounds 312 in charges. I would like to highlight this and stop other pensioners from having this extra money taken from them.
THE real problem is that your State pension is paid in sterling to an account in Britain, but you withdraw it in local currency in Cyprus. The Government has no control over your decision to retire abroad, nor does it have any say in bank charges.See the full content of this document
