ALAN JOHNSON was brought up by a 'surrogate' family after his mother died when he was 12.

In a remarkable act of kindness, London Underground engineer Albert Cox and his wife, Pat, who worked part-time in a fish and chip shop, came to the aid of the schoolboy, and took him into their modest home. In 1962, three years after their father had walked out on them, Alan and his elder sister Linda were effectively orphaned when their mother, Lilian, died of a heart attack.
