THE House at the Big Boot is a superb, antique-filled B& B in an ancient, family home on a lovely cobbled backstreet in a quiet corner of Prague. There is no sign outside and it doesn't advertise - so how come it is invariably full? Because it is rated number one out of 67 in the city by the review website TripAdvisor.com.

Star ratings and recommendations in guidebooks were once all- important to the success of a small hotel or B& B. But now guest reviews posted on TripAdvisor are often the most significant factor. Jan Rippl, the House at the Big Boot's charming owner, reckons at least 60 per cent of his guests read guest reviews about his establishment posted on TripAdvisor before booking.
