Like Katie Price, whom he recently dismissed as 'two bags of silicone', Martin Amis is nowadays less a novelist than a celebrity. Hands up who read Yellow Dog, or Heavy Water, or that last one, erm, what was it called? I don't see many hands in the air. But when he puts down his pen, dons his Martin Angry hat and spouts his off-the- wall opinions on Muslims or old folk, the world is content to gather round and tut-tut or hear-hear, at least for a minute or two.

His new novel has been billed as a return to form. The same is often said of new albums by Seventies pop stars such as Lou Reed or David Bowie, but they generally turn out to be disappointments - 'return to form' being a euphemism for 'sad rehash'.

The good news for Amis fans is that The Pregnant Widow is not about Stalin or the arms race or terrorism, or any of those Question Time-ish...
