Android Invasion ; Google Handsets Are Ready to Take On Iphone

Summary

Motorola's Blur and HTC's Hero both do things iPhone can't. Under the bonnet, they run Google's Android - a rival to the software inside iPhone - which lets phones provide live feeds from news sites or Twitter on screen. Unlike iPhone, Android phones can also run more than one application at once. Live feeds might sound designed to appeal to hyperactive Facebooking teenagers - but the stream of information means your screen is working for you, rather than just looking pretty.

Technology business analysts Gartner predict Android could overtake iPhone within two years. Android is already running on everything from eBook readers to internet tablets. Want a five megapixel camera? Pick HTC Hero. Want a QWERTY keypad? Pick T- Mobile's Google phone. There are already 12 Android handsets on sale - and 30 more predicted for next year.
