'We couldn't get Radio 1 in Dublin when I was growing up, so I didn't know it existed,' admits 26-year-old Annie Mac, the station's newest and youngest female DJ.
'I discovered it when I moved to Belfast to go to university, and it was like a whole new world: upfront, relaxed and playing music that hadn't even been released.' Determined to work for her beloved station, Annie did a postgraduate degree in radio, and worked for local and internet stations before landing a job in production at Radio 1 in London. 'While I was there I started recording DJ demos to give to producers and somebody picked up on my accent and husky voice. My first big job was to cover the late-night dance show and I was absolutely terrified.' The bosses were impressed, however, and recently rewarded her laid-back presenting style by giving her a weekly two-hour dance music show. 'I'm on just before John Peel.
