HSBC group chairman Stephen Green is not a man for turning. He refused last week to overturn his bank's decision to axe its branch in Shepshed, Leicestershire, despite the appeals of residents and businesses, as well as the local Labour MP, the church next door (Green is a practising Christian) and campaigners.

The 10,000-strong community is now without a bank branch it closed on Friday.
