Mrs C. F. writes: I noticed a cheque drawn on my Bradford Bingley account last August carried a customer reference, which was FOX CHRIST.

I told the bank that I strongly objected to this on religious grounds, but its answer was that references are based on surnames and a shortened first name and there was nothing it could do, though its technical staff would look into it. Recently, exactly the same thing happened again, so this time I closed my account.
