Summary


Mad is the only way to describe Britain's system of compensation awards. Other than insanity, it is difficult to see any consistent thread in some recent cases.

This week we have seen the Ministry of Defence fighting a Pounds 48,000 tribunal award to a serviceman shot in Iraq (he was offered Pounds 9,250 by the MoD). While a gay security guard was recently awarded Pounds 62,500 for depression triggered by the provocative behaviour of a colleague who, he claimed, wobbled her breasts at him.
