At the ski resort of Bansko, Bulgaria's runaway property boom is at its most brutal. A formerly sleepy, pleasant town, famous for its typically Balkan wood and stone-fortified houses, it has been systematically plundered by speculative developers who are hurling up holiday apartment blocks without a thought for the town's infrastructure, and very little regard to demand, writes Sebastian O'Kelly.

Assiduous publicity people in the employ of developers and estate agents spin the line that Bansko, two- and-a-half hours from Sofia, is destined to become the country's sophisticated ski and summer resort.
