Seven hundred desperate young Africans crash into the 20ft high border fence like a giant human wave. It is just before dawn, and some are armed with rocks.

In the grey half-light they hurl themselves up makeshift ladders and begin the treacherous climb out of Morocco and into the Spanish territory of Melilla.

Barricade of Blood ; It's Six Miles of Vicious, 20ft High Razor Wire and It's the Deadly Backdrop to an Unspeakable Daily Drama. Desperate Migrants Storm It in Their Hundreds in Search of a New Life in Britain and Many Pay a Grisly Price.

Vicious razor wire slices cruelly through the flesh of their hands and feet; some are still wrapped in filthy bandages from previous attempts to cross this tiny border into Europe.

The scene is chaos. Helicopters equipped with infrared cameras spotted the fleeing masses swarming out of a nearby forest where they had lain in hiding for weeks, months and even years.

The roaring blades add to the desperate cries and screams. Within minutes, the strongest, cut and bleeding, are astride the first of the two fences they must cross. Armed Moroccan border police struggle and fail to hold back further refugees, beating them mercilessly with truncheons. From the Spanish side, tear gas and rubber bullets are fired.
