Summary


THE transatlantic flight was a few hours old when Jack Charlton moved through the cabin, tapped Sir Alf Ramsey on the shoulder and blurted out his message. He had enjoyed some wonderful years with a great manager but, after much thought, he had decided that his international career was over. Ramsey gave him that thin smile. 'Quite right. Couldn't agree more, Jack,' he said, and returned to his newspaper.

That is the way the story goes, and if it isn't entirely accurate, then it's close enough. England were on their way home from the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, following defeat by West Germany and there was much rebuilding to be done. At 35, Charlton would play no part in that process. It was time to move on.
