Max Beesley bounds into his trailer on a freezing winter's morning in rural Hertfordshire. 'I like to be a jack of all trades and master of at least four,' he announces. 'The problem is, it's hard to be taken seriously when you have a few things in the mix.' You wouldn't think being taken seriously would be an issue for Beesley. The 34-year-old has toured the world as a percussionist with Paul Weller, The Brand New Heavies and Take That, become a prolific film and television actor in more than a dozen Hollywood films and a string of hit TV dramas, and shared a stage at Knebworth with childhood pal Robbie Williams in front of 135,000 people. The real problem, it seems, is that a certain ex-girlfriend is a) more famous than he is, and b) a former Spice Girl.

'You get painted with the same brush in every story,' says Beesley, blanching at the memory of the two years he spent being labelled little more than 'Mr Mel B', despite his prodigious achievements. 'But you can't help who you fall in love with. It was upsetting for me at that time. It doesn't matter how serious you are about your work or how well-prepared you are for a role, the perception of you as a famous woman's boyfriend always takes over.
