ON FRIDAY evening, as the Dail voted through cuts in payments to blind people, former taoiseach Bertie Ahern was nowhere to be seen in the Oireachtas. His absence surprised observers given that the State's only school for the visually impaired is in his Drumcondra heartland.

It had been expected that the man whose name is so closely associated with the area would be there to speak on behalf of St Joseph's School for the Visually Impaired. After all, it is located just yards from his constituency base, as is the National Council for the Blind of Ireland.
