BERTIE AHERN tried to persuade Finance Minister Brian Lenihan to drop a new tax on some of Ireland's wealthiest men, the Irish Mail on Sunday can reveal.

The former taoiseach urged Mr Lenihan to reverse a measure in last October's budget which forced the ultra-wealthy to pay more tax on their pension contributions. Until that point, self-employed professionals such as developers, lawyers, consultants and company directors earning up to EUR 275,000 a year could put huge sums into their pensions tax-free.
