Picture an Indian train and you'll probably think of an old loco trundling at walking pace, with people on the roof and hanging from doors, and more packed, possibly with animals, inside. But are they really like that? I decided to find out by touring Northern India by train.

I started at Bombay (now known as Mumbai). The road from the airport is muggy and sulphurous and lined with shantytown shacks, but the city itself is an attractive mixture of boulevards, busy arcades and grand Victorian public buildings.
