Vulnerability to illness is often seen as an inevitable part of the ageing process, writes Anastasia Stephens. However, researchers in Finland have found that eating cheese may slow the natural deterioration of the immune system brought on by advancing age - a process known as immunosenescence.

The elderly are more prone to infection and disease because their immune systems find it harder to kill cancerous cells and infectious pathogens.
