To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how swinging through the air became my life. It's an odd choice of career, especially considering my childhood at Wilton House, the stately home near Salisbury built by my family more than 400 years ago. Perhaps my love of heights came from hours of lying in treetops in the gardens watching the summer tourists picnicking below.

I first discovered the irresistible allure of the circus from our family friend Mary Chipperfield, of Chipperfield's Circus, as we would visit her elephants and pet jaguar in the Seventies.
