Summary

IF West had passed, on some different hand, North would have raised to just Two Spades. However, he was eminently correct to bid Four Spades after West's four-level overcall.

Had he passed instead, his side might have suffered a double- game swing (conceding a heart game when they might have made a spade game). How would you play game in spades when West leads two top hearts? You should ruff the second heart with the eight of trumps, retaining the six as a possible means of entering the dummy later. You lead the nine of trumps to the ace and lead a second trump, following with the ten when East's king appears. You duck the queen of clubs switch, win the next club and ruff a club in the dummy, everyone following. When you lead dummy's last heart, East shows out and you ruff with the queen. As a result of the play so far, any declarer who takes the trouble to count the opposing hands will know that West began with two spades, seven hearts and at least three clubs.
