GREAT BRITAIN took a small step towards restoring their reputation on the world stage by completing an emphatic victory over Turkey here yesterday.

Defeat in this Europe-African Zone Group Two match -- after five Davis Cup loses in succession -- would have been a new nadir for a country that has spent half a billion pounds in the past 20 years unsuccessfully trying to produce players. It would have relegated them to the lowest level in world tennis, alongside Moldova, Iceland and San Marino.
