What on earth did our communications industry do before the lucrative oneway traffic of premium-rate phone numbers was invented? Think only of outrages such as the Crazy Frog ringtone downloads or 'guaranteed' prizes worth tuppence ha'penny in return for listening to a five-minute recorded message at 2p a second.

At least with these there was a chance the punter might eventually get something (albeit at an exorbitant price). But, as we report on Page 3, broadcasters are now cashing in through 'participation quizzes' when it is a racing certainty there is nothing to be had.
