FABIO CAPELLO has already performed his first major service for England fans, ensuring they get value for money when they splash out for a friendly game. By trying to keep the Premier League managers onside by 'excusing' players international duty, and making so many substitutions during matches, Sven Goran Eriksson devalued the England shirt for friendlies. I still shudder in horror at the memory of the captain's armband being tossed to the floor after a flurry of substitutions in one game.

I notice that nobody has withdrawn from friendlies without a damn good reason since Capello came into the job. I understand finances are tight in plenty of family homes, so maybe not that many will be able to afford the [pounds]30 or [pounds]40 to see England this week against the Czech Republic. But the important thing is that those fans who do turn up deserve to see a proper football game. And I'm sure they will get one under the new regime.
