PATIENTS' lives will be put at risk and hospitals forced to close because of new European rules which limit doctors' working hours, according to the country's top surgeon.

John Black, president of The Royal College of Surgeons, has warned of an impending 'cata-strophein the NHS if all doctors are forced to comply with a directive which limits them to working a 48- hour week.
