THE Russian 'hero' who tried to trip up a fleeing knifeman at the Notting Hill Carnival may now be in trouble with the Home Office after his own mother cast doubt on his asylum story.

Valentine Simatchenko, 55, said he claimed asylum in Britain after fleeing the bloody war of independence in Chechnya. He was given indefinite leave to remain in Britain on the grounds that he fought against the Russian army in Chechnya.
