And the first word from the ecstatic miners to rescuers was: 'What the hell took you so long?' Tears pouring down her face, Sylvia Segovia, 45, the sister of trapped miner Victor Segovia, 48, said: 'This is the greatest moment of my life. After more than two months, I finally believe my brother will come home safe. Viva Chile!

'We have waited so long for this day. But we have to wait longer now to see our men. But this is the beginning of the end of this nightmare for us. God be praised.' At 8.02am (1.02pm in Ireland), bells and sirens rang throughout the camp, prompting family members to race through the dusty streets waving Chilean flags.
