THERE were worries from the start that the man who was promoted to JJB chief executive in August 2007, Chris Ronnie, still had too close a relationship with Mike Ashley, his former boss, given that Ashley's Sports Direct was JJB's major competitor.

JJB's chairman at the time, Roger Lane-Smith, asked Ronnie to sign a disclaimer to assure other board members that he no longer held commercial links with Ashley.
