When Linda Adley took up karate, she could not have imagined that besides keeping her fit, the martial art would help her find the strength to live.

The retired administrator from Purley, Surrey, was diagnosed with retroperitoneal sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in May 2001. Although the tumour that had formed behind the peritoneum - a tissue membrane lining the inside of the stomach - was removed, five years later the cancer returned.
