EARLY days it may be, but on first glance City's plans to improve enough on last season to secure European football at the end of this look some way off, while Albion, much the happier after gaining a welldeserved point, can expect to avoid any last-minute relegation escapes this time around.

In a tepid affair both teams huffed and puffed, but well before the end it was evident that it was one of those afternoons when a goal could not be bought. Indeed, the most exciting moment came when City manager Stuart Pearce ran towards his Albion counterpart, Bryan Robson, with clear intent to snatch the ball away, slipped over at his former England team-mate's feet, and thus ended the possibility of a clash of former legends.
