WE saw the ghost of Christmas past yesterday as Kauto Star eclipsed the record of the horse whose handsome grey statue stands sentry beside the paddock at Kempton. A huge crowd descended on the course, drawn by the prospect of witnessing the finest chaser of our times become the first to win the King George VI Chase for the fourth consecutive year.

What we had not anticipated was that he would turn this most competitive of mid season chases into a rout. Even in his pomp the swashbuckling grey Desert Orchid, who also won this famous old prize four times, though not consecutively, was never quite as dominant as Kauto Star yesterday.
