The construction sector has gone off a cliff, which isn't news to most people. According to the Construction Industry Federation, from a high of E24bn in 2006 - or 16pc of gross national product - residential output fell to E14bn last year and now accounts for 9pc of GNP. This is the difference between the 77,000 housing completions in 2007 and the estimated 51,000 last year.
