I feel compelled to tell Nick Clegg, the 39-year-old Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson and the gilded youth talked of as the next leader of his party, how sexy he is. Poor Clegg has recently been called an Alastair Campbell lookalike, an egregious insult for any politician. Actually, he has far softer features and a pleasantly impertinent nose reminiscent of William Holden's, beneath a cowlick of pale amber hair.

'Am I Really Sexy?' Asks Cleggie. 'Of Course', I Say, Wishing I'd Got to Him Before His Wife... ; Petronella Wyatt Interviews Nick Clegg

'Do you really think I am sexy?' Clegg is highly gruntled. Shortly, however, he begins to emanate anxiety. 'Do you mean sexy per se, or just sexier than Alastair Campbell? I was outraged to be compared to Campbell.' 'Sexy per se, of course,' I say insinuatingly.

Clegg puts down the salmon sandwich he is eating and regards me with wideapart turquoise eyes.'I'll give you a scoop then. A big one.' He pauses significantly.

'Ming Campbell is resigning next week.' Alas, it turns out to be a tease.
