'Cobweb' Effect of Tears in the Retina [Edition 4]

Summary


THE part of the eye where retinal tears happen is called the vitreous humor, which is similar to jelly or egg white. As people age, this naturally shrinks and pulls away from the wall of the retina. As it pulls away, it can cause tearing.

Although this is painless, visual disturbances, including large, black 'floaters' or flashing lights, can appear. Some patients feel as if a cobweb has been drawn over the eye.
