Our house faces on to a busy country B-road. A few weeks ago we heard a loud bang which we believe was caused by a car or lorry giving the house a glancing blow, although the vehicle had gone when we got outside. Apart from markings on the render we can't see any obvious damage, but how can we know it hasn't caused a problem that will manifest itself in future, when it is too late to submit an insurance claim?
If your house is old - and it almost certainly is if it is built straight on to the road how you describe - it may still have soft lime mortar. This would make the walls slightly flexible and so better able to withstand a slight shock without cracking. This is an unsatisfactory situation, however. You need to ensure this does not happen again. You should contact the highways department at your county council or unitary authority, invite them out to show them what has happened and pile on pressure to install some crash barriers.See the full content of this document
