If you swim out from the beach and look back, you get a true picture of coastal Croatia, a thin strip of land that rises steeply from the beguiling waters to a sharp saw of grey-white mountains that cut into the sky. It's an impressive scene theatrical but also protective.

Croatia's islands, which snake down the east edge of the Adriatic, are well enough known but it is only fairly recently that people have focused on the hinterland and what they've found they've liked.
