Johnny Murtagh, Jamie Spencer, Pat Smullen... the list of Ireland's champion apprentice jockeys is an illustrious one. Last year, Kildareman Gary Carroll was the runaway winner of the title, with 12 winners to spare.

This year, it's an altogether tighter affair. Carroll, with 38 winners after a win yesterday aboard Sabrina harty's Kalann at Dundalk, is one ahead of Ben Curtis on 37, with Joseph o'Brien a further two behind on 35 for the season. yesterday's meeting at Dundalk marked the fourth last day of the season for the apprentices, with this year's crop declared by many to be the golden generation.
