THE coastline shimmered in the early morning sun as our Brittany Ferry glided into St Malo. The tranquil sea contrasted dramatically with conditions on my last visit nearly 45 years ago. Then, on a family sailing holiday, we had scuttled into port, dodging the jagged rocks that guard the entrance, relieved to escape the turbulent seas as a storm blew up.

I spent many childhood holidays exploring the Brittany coast in a small yacht and the chance to return - staying for much of the time at a cottage near Quimper owned by friends - was irresistible.
