THE deadline for filing self-assessment tax forms is fast approaching, but experts warn that consumers going online to file their return for the first time may unwittingly be leaving it too late to avoid a penalty.

More than two million people are expected to file tax returns online this year. Consumers filing a self-assessment form for the year that ended April 5, 2007 must do so by the end of this month.
