My problems began in Hollywood. I had made my name in Britain in films such as If . . . in the late Sixties and Stanley Kubrick's classic A Clockwork Orange and suddenly I was part of a glamorous world in which drugs played a big role.

By 1980, I was using cocaine but was a long way from being an addict. Then I moved to Hollywood and it all started to spiral out of control.

I went from snorting the drug occasionally to smoking it, which is known as freebasing. I'd do as much as I could, finishing a batch at 4am and then driving completely stoned around the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles looking for more. How I didn't have an accident, I'll never know.
