Davy Fitzgerald had to fend off a concerted, but ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to oust him from the position of Waterford hurling manager last month, the Irish Mail on Sunday has learned. The Clare native was subjected to a torrent of text messages by individuals close to the statisticians he axed from his backroom team after this year's all-Ireland semi-final defeat to Tipperary.

It's also known that the same people lobbied strongly in favour of Michael Ryan's failed bid to replace him as Waterford boss. Part of their campaign involved contacting certain journalists in an effort to air their grievances about Fitzgerald's management.
