I wonder what I would have thought in 1962, when I had my first book published, if someone had prophesied that my novels could be read, not by opening a book, but by pressing a key, or that the world of publishing, whose members saw their jobs as seeking out talent and spending time and money in helping it to mature, would become part of international big business and fall largely into the hands of accountants.

The 50 years since have seen immense changes in every aspect of human life, including publishing. The past is indeed another country.
