A LACK of confidence, a temperament ill-suited to the ruthless business of politics and family commitments are some of the reasons traditionally put forward to explain the woefully low number of women in the Dail. But what nobody at the Dail subcommittee convened last week to explore the matter pointed out was that even with our paltry levels of female participation, we have more than enough women TDs to confound every one of the supposed obstacles.

Women don't have enough confidence to run for the Dail? Step forward Mary Coughlan, pictured, who is happy to assume the second most powerful role in the Government and to chat on endlessly about subjects about which she appears to know little, such as Europe and the economy.
