OK I'LL come clean.When I was choosing an Easter holiday destination for me and my two stepchildren - our first as a trio since the death of their father, Harry Thompson, in 2005 - my first priority was sunshine.

We are all well travelled - the children are only 11 and nine and have already been as far afield as China, Mongolia and Iran - but their appreciation of a swimming pool is 900 times greater than that of a museum. And since they have both inherited their father's love of shopping, Dubai seemed the perfect choice.

Dubai is an odd-looking place - think Manhattan skyscrapers pasted on to paradise beaches. Most buildings look as if they were finished less than five years ago and the number of cranes dotting the skyline suggests that in another five years, the place will be unrecognisable.
