Whenpiersmet Elton ; [Now That's What We Call the X-Factor]

Summary

Pinner in Middlesex isn't renowned for turning out rock 'n' rollers, but for much of the Seventies and Eighties, the town's native son, Sir Elton John, blazed a trail of excess through the pop arena, as the former Reg Dwight metamorphosed into the music world's unstoppable Rocket Man. These days John cuts a more avuncular figure than the one who partied at New York's Studio 54 club with Andy Warhol and Freddie Mercury, while his Bacchanalian appetite for drugs has been replaced in recent years by a passion for charity work, specifically as head of the Aids Foundation that bears his name.

In an intimate interview, Piers Meets Elton: A Life Stories Special (ITV1, Sunday, 9.30pm), John recalls the bumpy road to sobriety that eventually led to domestic happiness with his partner David Furnish, and his struggle to cope with obsessive compulsive disorder. But as well as the confessional chit-chat, the man whose phone number is in more celebrities' little black books than Max Clifford's also offers insights into life as the unofficial guardian angel to the stars, recalling his friendship with Princess Diana and the reasons behind their falling out. There's also a reminder of the music that propelled the piano man to success, with a performance of the classic Your Song.
