David Page puts his success down to getting sacked. The chairman of restaurant group Clapham House believes that running a business was his only real option because he was never a good employee and once lost a job as a cartographer for refusing to wear a tie.

But he dressed up last week to receive the Entrepreneur of the Year award at the third annual Quoted Company Awards in recognition of his achievements as boss of the group that owns the Gourmet Burger Kitchen, The Bombay Bicycle Club, Real Greek and Tootsies restaurant chains.
