Summary


VANITY, I know, is a terrible thing but the truth will set me free. The first thing I do when I pick up a new non-fiction book about Ireland is look up the index to see if I'm in it. Usually, I'm not. But this week, my egotistical flicking yielded fruit when I picked up the new book by John Bowman, Window And Mirror - RTE television: 1961-2011.

The reference is on page 174 and concerns an episode in 1990 when I reported on the role of Eoghan Harris in Mary Robinson's campaign for the Presidency that year. I was actually the first reporter to get wind of his involvement and, on the day after the election count, published in the Irish Times an interview with Harris that quoted liberally from documents he had drawn up for Mrs Robinson, advising her how to speak, dress and otherwise modify her rather starchy persona in order to ingratiate herself with the people.
