THERE is no one lonelier than the child who is physically or sexually abused by a parent. The monstrous father from Sheffield (it seems outrageous to call him a father when his cruelty and rapaciousness broke every parental bond), who was sentenced to life imprisonment 25 times over for the multiple rapes of his daughters from the time they were eight, condemned his terrified children to complete isolation.

In spite of the fact that 100 child protection professionals were involved with the family, the daughters did not reveal their suffering to anyone. At last week's official inquiry it was said they could have been encouraged, helped and supported to disclose the crimes against them. And yet they told no one.
