Then there's the curious case of Dominic West. As Detective Jimmy McNulty in HBO's The Wire, he spent five years pounding the streets of one of the most dangerous cities in the western hemisphere. Hard- drinking and lecherous with no respect for authority, McNulty swaggered through Baltimore's meanest streets like he owned them, making his own rules as he went along, and damn the consequences. West acknowledges that he has become virtually synonymous with the character of McNulty. On the day we meet, he's just back from a weekend visit to Glastonbury, where there was no getting away from cries of 'Yo! McNulty!' from festival-goers of all ages.
