Over the past few years sports manufacturers have tried to muscle in on the territory of classic adventure watches, creating mass- produced timepieces armed with GPS systems, pedometers and heart- rate monitors.

The problem is that the cheaper designs make you look like you are setting out for a day at the skate park, rather than to conquer Everest. It's difficult to imagine James Bond rolling up his sleeve to reveal some plastic monstrosity rather than the Omega Seamaster.
